Format of Physics Examination
How are students going to be tested on the Physics papers?
One of the key areas of the A Level Physics syllabus is the assessment scheme which requires students to complete a set of papers within a given timeframe. Each of these papers contains specific sorts of questions that evaluate students’ ability to effectively apply their knowledge of physics.
H1 Physics (8866) Format
Students are supposed to complete two papers for taking H1 Physics.
Paper 1: Multiple Choice Questions
Paper 1 contains 30 multiple choice questions to be answered within 1 hour. Paper 1 accounts for 33 percent of the overall grade.
Paper 2: Structured Questions
Paper 2 allows students to pick two out of three 20-mark questions. Those questions test students’ ability to combine their knowledge and comprehension towards physics. Paper 2 is to be done within 2 hours, taking 67 percent of the overall grade.
H2 Physics (9749) Format
Paper 1: Multiple Choice Questions
Students are expected to complete four papers for taking the H2 Physics. Paper 1 consists of 30 questions of multiple choice, to be completed within 1 hour. Paper 1 represents 15 percent of the overall grade.
Paper 2: Structured Questions
Paper 2 consists of structured questions which require students to incorporate knowledge based on their understanding of the syllabus of A-level physics. Students will need to attempt data-based questions, which contain a specified collection of information to be analyzed by them. They have 2 hours to complete Paper 2 and it holds 30% of the overall grade.
Paper 3: Long Structured Questions
Paper 3 includes the longer structured questions concerning different topics integration. Paper 3 lasts 2 hours and occupies 35 percent of overall grade.
Paper 4: Practical Assessment
Paper 4, aka practical assessment, tests the students’ skills in terms of planning, manipulation, measurement and observation, data presentation, analysis and evaluation. Students are given 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete the assessment which is 20 percent of the overall grade.
