GCE A Level 8873/9729 Chemistry Syllabus 2017

Understanding the JC A Level Chemistry Syllabus

It is recommended for students to understand the criteria for the curriculum and recognize essential components that influence the way they analyse the topics in the A Level Chemistry examination. Students can choose to study H1 Chemistry (8873) or H2 Chemistry (9729) at A level.

Areas Of Study For JC Chemistry

A broad variety of topics that dig into the field of chemistry is presented to the students. By taking H2 Chemistry, students will study more topics than taking H1 Chemistry. The goal, indeed, is to enhance students’ understanding of natural science in Chemical.

Examination Format For Chemistry

How will students be tested on the Chemistry papers?
The assessment scheme of the A level Chemistry syllabus in which students are required to complete a number of papers within a given period is one of the key areas that students have to cope with. Each paper consists of specific types of questions that assess students’ ability on how they effectively apply their knowledge of chemistry.

H1 Chemistry (8873) Exam Format

Students are supposed to complete two papers for taking H1 Chemistry.

Paper 1: Multiple Choice Questions

Paper 1 comprises 30 multiple choice questions to be done in 1 hour. This paper accounts for 33% of the overall grade.

Paper 2: Structured Questions

In Paper 2, two out of three structured questions of 20 marks must be selected by students. These questions evaluate students’ ability to incorporate their experience and knowledge of chemistry. Paper 2 which accounts for 67% of the overall grade must be completed within 2 hours.

H2 Physics (9729) Format

Paper 1: Multiple Choice Questions

There are four compulsory papers for students who take H2 Chemistry. Paper 1 contains 30 multiple choices questions to be answered within 1 hour. This paper accounts for 15% of the overall grade.

Paper 2: Structured Questions

Paper 2 includes structured questions requiring students to integrate knowledge in the A Level Chemical Syllabus. The purpose of this paper is to task students with data-based questions which comprise certain information to be analysed. Paper 2 shall be finished within 2 hours. It accounts for 30 % of the overall grade.

Paper 3: Free Response Questions

The longer structured questions concerning integration of different topics are included in Paper 3. This paper is to be completed in 2 hours and it accounts for 35% of the overall grade.

Paper 4: Practical Assessment

The practical assessment is an alternate name of Paper 4. This paper assesses the students ‘ ability to plan, manipulate, measure, observe, present, analyse and evaluate in Chemistry context. It accounts for 20% of the overall grade, and students are given 2 hours 30 minutes to complete this paper.

For H1 Chemistry Syllabus (8873)

  • Paper 1: Multiple Choice Questions
  • Paper 2: Structured Questions

H2 CHEMISTRY SYLLABUS(9729)

  • Paper 1: Multiple Choice Questions
  • Paper 2: Structured Questions
  • Paper 3: Free Response Questions
  • Paper 4: Practical Assessment
